Government Increases Education Budget by 16.2% for 2026

BANJUL, The Gambia — The 2026 Budget has reaffirmed the Government of The Gambia’s commitment to strengthening Basic and Secondary Education, with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) allocated D5.9 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. This represents a 16.2 percent increase from last year’s allocation and reflects the central role education continues to play in the national development agenda.

In presenting the budget, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Seedy K.M Keita highlighted that the rise is largely attributed to increased subventions and personnel emoluments, measures aimed at ensuring schools are adequately staffed and better supported in delivering quality education.

The budget speech outlines D352.4 million for the School Improvement Grant, a provision expected to help schools address pressing operational needs. It further notes D230.9 million allocated to cover WAEC examination fees, easing financial strain on households and supporting equitable access to assessments.

School feeding remains a priority, with D250 million earmarked to continue providing nutritious meals that encourage attendance and retention. The speech also includes D46.6 million for the Programme for Public Administration Modernization Project (PAMP), alongside D24 million for the Gambia National Library Service Authority, underscoring ongoing efforts to modernise administration and enhance learning resources.

The 2026 Budget Speech emphasises that education remains a top national priority, with this year’s allocation signalling a sustained commitment to improving access, quality and equity across the country’s education system.
